The Norwich branch of the RNLI have a very special supporter in Doris Lanford and after 65 years of loyal service, they decided to commission a very special gift by way of thanks.
Following an accident, Doris now needs to rely on a wheelchair and the Norwich RNLI branch wanted to make sure she was as comfortable as possible. Jane, founder of Nicosy says “I was very excited to be able to support the team in creating this very special gift for Doris. She is a remarkable woman and I am proud that she is so delighted to have received her very own Nicosy!”
Secretary of the RNLI Norfolk branch Jane Crane, was able to share a huge amount of information about the lovely Doris and why she is so deserving of this special gift!
Doris Langford MBE, who continues to serve on the committee of the Norwich branch, can trace her love of the RNLI back to wartime years. As a teenager she recalls how she stayed in Sheringham, North Norfolk towards the end of the Second World War. Staying in the home of the Pegg family, with their long-standing history of lifeboat service, Doris was quickly fascinated by launches of the lifeboat and fishing boats very close to where she was staying.
Doris says *I can remember seeing a German plane being shot down, and the wreckage on the beach at Sheringham”. “We used to travel there on the train from our home in Corpusty, around 20 miles away”. Both the plane wreckage and the train line have long since gone, but Doris’s love of the RNLI remains as strong as ever.
Joining the Norwich branch in the early 1950’s at the age of around 20, Doris has remained a stalwart ever since. She has deservedly won every accolade afforded to non-crew supporters, and this Governor of the RNLI proudly received her MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2011, in recognition of her services to the charity.
A Nicosy was ordered for her in royal blue, embellished with the RNLI Governor’s badge and presented by Andrew Barnes, the branch Chairman at the recent AGM. Doris was delighted with her gift.

Jane Crane adds “After more than 65 years of service, Doris has expressed her wish to remain on the Norwich committee, and despite not being in a position to collect or run her “mobile souvenir shop” anymore, her contribution and memories are invaluable and very much recognised by her fellow committee members. Long may she continue!”
At Nicosy, we couldn’t agree more and send our huge thanks to the team for thinking of us.
